The Amnesty Rush Is On!
The New American

The New American, February 23, 2003

"It has been nearly three weeks since President Bush proposed ‘temporary’ legal status for millions of illegal immigrants residing in the United States," commented a San Diego Union-Tribune editorial on January 27. "Already, San Diego is starting to see the unintended consequences at the San Ysidro port of entry. U.S. Border Patrol officials report a 15 percent increase in the use of fraudulent documents at the world’s busiest land border crossing. And more than half of those caught using phony documents say the president’s offer of de facto amnesty motivated them to attempt to sneak into the United States."

"This surge in unlawful attempts to cross the southern border is precisely what U.S. border enforcement officers and immigration policy experts predicted," continues the editorial. To that list could be added this magazine, which noted, shortly following the president’s amnesty announcement, that "the immediate, and quite predictable, effect" of the offer was a surge in illegal crossings of the southern border. Citing a report in the Arizona Star, The New American pointed out that this surge began on January 7 — the day of the president’s amnesty speech — and concluded: "It’s reasonable to expect that a similar ‘amnesty rush’ is underway elsewhere as millions — or tens of millions — of others race to take advantage of the Bush plan."
